The RHX method depends on the validity of this law for describing long-term RHX weight gain on archaeological timescales. The method of calculation is based on temperature data for the location, with adjustments for burial depth and long-term temperature variation from historical records. Any event involving exposure to extreme heat may reset the “clock” by dehydroxylating the specimen, as though it were just out of the kiln. For example, a medieval brick examined by Wilson and collaborators [1] produced a dating result of 66 years. In fact this brick had been dehydroxylated by the intense heat of incendiary bombing and fires during World War II.

Yet most archaeological material contains components which causes either addition mass gain or additional mass loss during the RHX measurement process.

Production stages[ edit ] Clay ware takes on varying physical characteristics during the making of pottery. Greenware refers to unfired objects. The predictable way in which fired clay material absorbs environmental moisture via a process called rehydroxylation RHX provides, for the first time, a method of directly dating archaeological ceramics. In many respects the concept of RHX dating is simple and can potentially provide a date of manufacture for archaeological ceramics.

Most mineral materials, including the constituents of pottery, have the property of thermoluminescence TL , where part of the energy from radioactive decay in and around the mineral is stored in the form of trapped electrons and later released as light upon strong heating as the electrons are detrapped and combine with lattice ions.

By comparing this light output with that produced by known doses of radiation, the amount of radiation absorbed by the material may be found. When pottery is fired, it loses all its previously acquired TL, and on cooling the TL begins again to build up. Thus, when one measures dose in pottery, it is the dose accumulated since it was fired, unless there was a subsequent reheating.

If the radioactivity of the pottery itself, and its surroundings, is measured, the dose rate, or annual increment of dose, may be computed. A leaflet from Daybreak describing the TL technique in more detail and giving a bibliography will be provided to interested persons. The phenomenon of thermoluminescence was first described by the English chemist Robert Boyle in It was employed in the ‘s as a method for radiation dose measurement, and soon was proposed for archaeological dating.

By the mid ‘s, its validity as an absolute dating technique was established by workers at Oxford and Birmingham in England, Riso in Denmark, and at the University of Pennsylvania in the U. While not so accurate as radiocarbon dating, which cannot date pottery except from soot deposits on cooking pots , TL has found considerable usefulness in the authenticity of ceramic art objects where high precision is not necessary.

A seafarers tale – an archaeological elucidation of a shipwreck By Sten Sjostrand Dreary weather and intermittent rain has led to a dramatic drop in temperature over the last few days and then, just as the rain finally stopped, a cold wind began to blow from the north. It whipped up high waves and enormous swells that broke repeatedly against the side of the ship giving the deck, and everyone on it, a good showering. It was unbearably cold, wet and miserable. Captain Heng Tai dexterously managed to avoid getting any salt water in his face as he crouched and turned with every hit.

He was an experienced captain who had sailed this route many times before, but never so late in the season. The best time for the voyage was December when the northeast monsoon winds guaranteed a fair and safe passage all the way down the South China Sea. But now, late in February, the winds were forceful, occasionally violent and sometimes frightening. The swell generated by these waves was higher than any Heng Tai could remember.

As well as being cold and wet, Heng Tai was now starting to get a very uncomfortable feeling in the pit of his stomach. Without that delay he would have been at sea much earlier and none of this would be happening. They were now supplying more than half of the total ceramics for the whole region and the increase in orders meant the kilns were swamped and finding it increasingly hard to meet delivery deadlines.
